NEW TECHNOLOGY

An investment in new technology and equipment, means you will benefit from better service levels and lower costs.

MINI-Rae PID allowing better visibility of VOCs

The new Photoionization Detection (PID) monitor measures Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) during the logging of contaminated soils and as a part of ground-gas monitoring rounds. It identifies the presence of VOCs within the soils of brownfield sites, allowing us to provide you with a more thorough contamination assessment. By using it to identify where levels of VOCs are highest during logging, we can better identify the areas of gross contamination, so that chemical testing gives you, faster and more accurate results.

Topsoil verification tool, helping you to ensure your Topsoil is compliant

A tool to help developers to select Topsoil, which is suitable for use, is now available on request from Ground & Water.

Often Topsoil is imported to site, without your consultant’s knowledge, which is out of date or has inappropriate certificates. As part of validation conditions it is highly likely (and a technical necessity) that Topsoil must be independently inspected by a Geoenvironmental engineer.

On sampling and testing Topsoil, the results often show it has high Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons, Lead content and even Asbestos fibres. We do our best to pragmatically assess the risk this poses, but sometimes the Topsoil is unsuitable and has to be removed at extra cost to the client. The tool – which takes the form of a checklist and technical guide – will help you to find good quality and compliant Topsoil, reducing this eventuality.

CASE STUDIES

Two heads are better than one

Ground & Water site investigation saves a major housing developer time and money.

In August a client approached the team to re-look at remediation advice provided to it in 2017 by another consultancy. Following a detailed site investigation and risk assessment carried out by senior engineer, Roger Foord, revised guidance was issued, This has the potential to save the client a substantial sum of money. Solid foundations for big tanks

Soft ground, settlement and a wall, makes Ground & Water dig deep for its client.

In March, Ground & Water was instructed to carry out a site investigation at a Waste Transfer Station in Marchwood, Southampton. The aim was to establish ground conditions underlying the site, to assist our client and its designers to help them prepare a scheme for development. The proposed development was to install two 450-tonne Nitrogen storage tanks. This site investigation was particularly challenging given that the site was surrounded by a high concrete wall, meaning the drilling equipment had to craned in. Click here for more…

Hampshire planning applications crisis

Natural England, has issued new methodology guidance on nutrient (nitrate) levels in water, which has stopped Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and East Hampshire councils from issuing planning permission on new-build homes. It asserts new development related nutrient levels in the Solent are damaging the natural ecosystems. Read more here…

COMMUNITY AND ENGAGEMENT

Corporate social responsibility initiative delivers a clean beach in Gosport

As part of Ground & Water’s commitment to you and our wider community, in December 2018 we reported that the team would be given two day’s paid leave per year, on top of their annual entitlement, to be used for charitable and community work. On 7 June, in pouring rain, the team mustered at the beach front in Gosport. Following coffee and bacon sandwiches, they set off to clean the beach! Six black bags of rubbish, that included a Christmas sock, a kazoo, several lolly pop sticks and a portable charging device later… the task was complete. The second day will be used by individuals to carry out their own community or charitable work.
